Orphan girls at "Home Hollister" in Maastricht, circa 1918

Sunday, November 10, 2019

World War I Veterans Open House

498 Fifth Street, 1:00 to 4:00 pm

Forty-one draftees left Hollister on September 21, 1917 to train at Camp Lewis before heading over to France. Recent photographs received from the Gilroy Historical Society depict draftees being paraded around town before leaving from the train depot at the end of Fifth Street. More than 2000 people came out to wish them well.

Also on display will be the story of Mrs. George Wapple and how she headed up the local Belgium Relief Committee to raise money for the girls shown in this photo. The orphanage was named "Home Hollister" because of our large contributions.
